5 Tips for Starting and Sticking to New Habits

Starting and sticking to new habits can be challenging, but it's a great way to start feeling your best. Whether you're looking to push yourself out of your comfort zone more often, spend more time with the people you love, or simply eat healthier, establishing new habits can help you get there, but don’t feel the need to re-invent yourself!

Here are five tips to help you start and stick to new habits:

  1. Start small. It's easy to get overwhelmed when you first introduce a new habit, so it's important to start small and gradually build up. For example, if your goal is to start swimming, start by doing a short swim once a week and gradually increase the length of your swims, or the amount you do a week.
  2. Make it a part of your normal routine. Consistency is key when it comes to establishing new habits, so it's important to make them easily incorporated into something you already do. Choose a specific time or day to do your new habit, and stick to it as closely as possible. This will help you develop the habit and make it feel like a natural part of your routine. For example, on your lunch break, reach out to a family member or friend you haven't spoken to in a while.
  3. Track your progress. Tracking your progress can be a great way to stay motivated and accountable. Whether you use a journal, a smartphone app, or simply check off each day on a calendar, keeping track of your progress will help you see how far you've come and keep you motivated to keep going.
